December 4, 1981 — December 26, 2024
Sergeant Major Anders Johansson was born in Edmonds, Washington, on December 4, 1981. Anders grew up in Anacortes, Washington, where he graduated from Anacortes Senior High School in 1997. Known for his determination and leadership from an early age, Anders began his journey of service by attending the International ALERT Academy in 1997 with Unit 13. While there, he completed rigorous training in Emergency Response, Technical Rescue, Emergency Medical Services, Structural Firefighting, and Law Enforcement. During his time with ALERT, Anders participated in missions for Wilderness Search and Rescue, Underwater Search and Recovery, and Disaster Relief Operations in Michigan, Texas, Alabama, and Honduras.
Following his graduation, Anders remained on ALERT staff, where he played a pivotal role in developing the Emergency Services Operations and Law Enforcement training programs. His dedication and leadership inspired countless young men in the program. Even after joining the Army, Anders continued to mentor ALERT men, offering guidance to those pursuing military careers and furthering the program's mission.
On March 15, 2003, Anders enlisted in the United States Army as an Infantryman, and in 2004, he earned the prestigious Green Beret after being selected for Special Forces. Over his illustrious career, Sergeant Major Johansson served in some of the Army's most elite units and undertook numerous demanding assignments, including key leadership roles within the United States Special Operations Command. His career included 12 combat and contingency deployments across a multitude of countries. A true American warrior, his bravery was recognized with numerous awards, including the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, eight Bronze Stars (one with "V" device), and the Purple Heart.
Despite his extraordinary military career, Anders was more than a Soldier. He was a steadfast family man and a pillar of his community. He and his wife, Sarah, married in 2004 and built a life filled with love and adventure alongside their children: Anders (Adino), Gunnar, Arete, and Eowyn. Anders profoundly loved his family, always prioritizing their growth and well-being.
Outside of the military, Anders was a visionary leader within his church and community. Inspired by his passion for preparing the next generation, he started a youth group and a scouting program called Pursuit. Pursuit instilled life skills, resilience, leadership, and service values in young men and women. He had a unique ability to connect with people and inspire them to lead a life of personal growth, responsibility, and preparedness, strengthening the community for service and leadership.
Anders' impact extended beyond his professional and community achievements. He was a loyal friend and steadfast mentor, striving for excellence in his own life and encouraging others to do the same. His love for God and country was only matched by his passion for the people around him. He was a true patriot who believed love is sacrifice and service to his fellow man.
Most of all, Anders’ faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of his life and work. Like David and his mighty warriors—whom he admired—he believed the Lord was his Rock, the One who trained his hands for war and stood as his fortress in every battle, both literal and spiritual. This unwavering devotion shaped his decisions, his relationships, and his mission.
Because he lived his faith rather than merely professing it, those around him found their own faith renewed. Through quiet conversations, shared prayers, and the steadiness of his example, he drew people closer to Christ. He knew that faith not only sustains but transforms, and his life remains a testament to that truth.
